Content Management is one of the largest budget items in the Total Cost of Ownership of a web site. Content Management is the task of gathering the information from the Content Owners, getting approval, creating the pages, adding test and images to the site, editing, and updating it.
For a web site in today's world to be a powerful business tool, the content must be current, accurate, and informative. A web site might get redesigned once a year, but the content needs to be managed daily.
A CMS is a tool that helps to reduce and eliminate much of the expense of creating, approving, deploying and maintaining content.
A CMS separates the overall site structure, the design and navigation, from the information that is being presented. Content Owners are able to add their own content to the web site with no knowledge of web programming. Content can be cut and pasted from word processor documents, or can be created through a web tool with a familiar toolbar similar to your word processing software. Images are managed in an image library and supporting documents like PDF's can be checked into a Resource library.
In multi-user environments where content is being deployed by multiple owners, business rules can dictate authorization to launch new content, and system features eliminate the risk of overwriting files.
